“My Little Squirrel”

My little squirrel was born in the spring of 2010. I fed their mother in the old, magic tulip tree in my front yard. I witnessed her die, and unbeknownst to me, she had little kits deep in the cavern of the mighty tree. Since they are born blind and rely solely on their mom for up to 8 weeks, I began my daily care giving routine of climbing a ladder to reach them, leaving them treats and water three times a day. With the help of the “magic tulip tree” to protect them, and perseverance, my babies grew up big and strong. To this day, they wait for me, as I gently leave them peanuts, apples, bananas, grapes and cereal. The girl has had several litters, raising them in the very same cavern, but always meets me on her” home – base” branch, to gather her treats. She calmly blinks her eyes, staring at me, showing her great appreciation for the bounties at hand.
