Text on back of card:

“The Change of Pace”

The original “Change of Pace”in Macomb, Illinois was a beautiful hotel built by C.V. Chandler in 1899. It was located at
226-232 N. Lafayette Street, adjacent to the train depot. In 1909 it was purchased by J.M. Pace, & was renamed the Pace Hotel. Its location welcomed all who visited (it was not unusual to see visitors exiting the Amtrak train, whisking straight to the Pace to meet friends with luggage in hand). In the early 1970’s it became “The Change of Pace” – an artsy, avant – garde sort of club where musicians & artists could express their talents. Macomb residents & Western Illinois University students alike would gather on the peaceful front porch which overlooked the beautiful Chandler Park to cool off & relax in summer, or watch the twinkling Christmas lights of the park in the winter. In the back of the establishment, past the long bar, one would always find a continuous pool game going on. Tucked away in a corner was an original phone booth from the 1940’s where one could actually enter, close the glass doors, & privately sit inside to make an old fashioned phone call for a dime.
Mr. John Wilbur, Pete & Paul Banach were the proprietors of this creation, & were the glue that held it all together. Great live music, a game of cards & a smile was always on the agenda. The Old Change of Pace had a magical, camaraderie charm about it & was a place where many folks met, created cherished memories & was where life long friendships were cultivated. Although this original Change of Pace was torn down in 1990 in the name of progress, it was relocated to 301 N. Campbell St. Its legacy carried on until June 25th, 2022.
Hold your glass high, cheers to the“Pace” old &new – the place to go where everyone knew your name.
